Valentine’s Day is the day of love, and it is a great opportunity for women, whether in a relationship or not, to consider getting their Love Jones at the gym or through exercise.  Valentine frame background

 

A new study by the Center for Sexual Health at Indiana University concludes that many women interviewed experience orgasm with physical exercise.  According to this report, these “corgasms” are linked to exercises for the abdominal muscles.  The research, directed by Debby Herbenick, relied on online surveys to gather data and included responses by “124 women who had experienced exercise-induced orgasms and 246 women who reported exercised-induced sexual pleasure.” [1]  The majority of the respondents were between the ages of 18 and 63, with an average age of 30.  Most reported that they were either married or in a relationship, and 69 percent stated that they were heterosexual.

This study is significant for healthy green living because it gives women another really great reason to exercise, in addition to weight control, mood enhancement, prevention and management of a variety of health problems and mood enhancement.  Also, sexual health is an important component emotional, mental and social well-being.  A keyboard with a pleasure key - social concept

It is important to note that not all types of exercises were linked to the experience of orgasm.  The study results indicate that 45 percent of the women stated that their first sexual experience while exercising was linked to abdominal exercises; 19 percent experienced orgasm with biking/spinning; 9.3 percent with climbing poles; and 7 percent with weightlifting and running.  The remainder mentioned orgasm experienced with yoga, swimming, elliptical machines, and aerobics.  More women stated that they felt sexual pleasure as opposed to orgasm phenomenon.  The important takeaway here is that exercise can provide a healthy avenue in which a woman can learn to love herself, embrace her sexuality and cherish her body.

Love and sports

When one stops and ponders this concept, maybe it is not that unusual.  After all, if you have ever taken any classes at a gym, think about how engaged the female instructors tend to be, particularly in the spin classes, weight training and both the water and step aerobics.  I distinctly recall the level of excitement by the instructor in the Zumba classes approaching that of an old-time revival.  We all recall the recent uproar at Wimbledon whereby female tennis players grunted and shrieked during matches, prompting the tennis associations to launch campaigns to ban such behavior.  [2]  Just maybe these women are responding to exercised-induced sexual pleasure.  Of course, this would not be considered by the largely male executives of this sport, who probably would never give credit to any sexual pleasure to a source other than a man.  Finally, take a trip to a Baltimore sports event, such as an Orioles or Ravens game.  Even with the singing of the National Anthem, notice the crowd, especially the ladies, scream “O” with the last stanza.  Maybe, just maybe the exhilaration of the sporting event is teasing their sexual pleasure.

Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you are at least somewhat familiar with the book and just-released movie, Fifty Shades of Grey.  As I write this article, thousands of women are in line or online purchasing tickets to see this movie.  Well ladies, now you know you do not have to pay money and sit on the sideline letting Christian Grey be the stimulus for your sexual pleasure.  Spend your money on a gym class, a pair of running shoes or weights and take charge of your own orgasm or sexual pleasure.  Share exercise routines with your husband or significant other to enhance your relationships.  For the men– if you are still out there looking for that great Valentine’s gift, consider the gift of a gym membership or a commitment to exercise together to improve the romantic aspect of your relationship.  Diverse Hands Holding The Word Exercise

This Sunday, September 22nd, is the autumn equinox, signaling the official start of fall, and we here at LGBG would like to mark this occasion by discussing ways to put green in your fall season.  While many of us lament the passing of spring and summer with warmer temperatures and opportunities for longer days with outdoor activities and parties, as well as easier access to local fresh fruits and vegetables, we must not forget that the autumn or harvest season is a wonderful time for the same, often in greater abundance.  We do acknowledge that with vacation time over and children back in school, we often have to work a little harder to live green, but the opportunities to do so are present in the fall.

Perhaps the first and most important step to have a green autumn is to view the new season as a time for change and welcome the chance to embrace this period.  Here is a list of good and green things about autumn that we hope will interest you.

  • The fall is a great time for outdoor activities.  With cooler temperatures, walking, running, jogging and biking activities are more enjoyable.  Youth football, soccer and field hockey seasons are in full swing, and the children get to hone their skills while getting good exercise.  This is a great chance to get in the game– kicking or throwing the ball around with your children is good for the whole family in terms of exercise and time spent together.  Also, while children are attending practices, this is a perfect time to go for a walk or run.
  • Football also is a huge fall attraction.  Hosting a college or NFL football party or celebrating a child’s team with a focus on healthy green fare or simply having a family party where each family member prepares a green dish can be a lot of fun.  As a bonus, take your game outside and throw the football during halftime.
  • Autumn is an opportune time to enjoy many delicious foods and to experiment with recipes.  This is the time of color, and that color transcends to fruits and vegetables, whose nutritional benefits are well documented.  Scientific evidence shows that pigmented fruits and vegetables are rich in phytonutrients — compounds that fight off free radicals that cause cancer and that can increase the risk of heart disease and other enemies to the body that cause diabetes, osteoporosis and more.  Of particular note is the fall apple harvests and fall festivals celebrating the apple with enjoyable offerings.
  • The autumn season provides each of us an opportunity to realign with nature.  While we often scramble around enjoying the warmer months, now is the time to slow down, use the cooler evenings as a time to rest, relax, read, meditate and spend time on yourself.  Take the time to enjoy the changing leaves.  Hiking with family and walking pets can be very relaxing.

Autumn is a very special and beautiful season, dramatically ushered in by that big harvest moon.  To embrace this time with its bounty in nutritious food and opportunities for great family fun, as well as the chance for self introspection and renewal, is to live green be green.

Fall has arrived officially.  Life is busier than ever with the children back in school and with several major holidays swiftly approaching.  For many people, this season signals fewer visits to the gym and difficulty maintaining workout schedules.  The good news is that a lot of fall activities carry great health benefits, especially in the area of calorie burning, while also being relaxing and fun.

  • Walking.  Temperatures are cooler and outside colors are vibrant.  For every hour of hiking, expect to burn about 400 calories.  Also, this is a great time to walk through a corn maze.  The kids will have fun and walking here for an hour will burn approximately 300 calories.
  • Raking leaves.  This is one of the mandatory rites of autumn with a great health benefit.  While raking tones arm muscles, it also burns more than 100 calories every half hour.
  • Chopping wood.  Take that simulated wood chopping move practiced in the gym to tone abs to the next level.  In addition to saving money on firewood for the winter, splitting wood for 25 minutes burns 150 calories.
  • Pumpkin picking.  Walking with a 10-lb pumpkin is as good as a kettlebell workout with the added bonuses of fresh air, beautiful scenery and a 270-calorie burn.
  • Organizing a fall wardrobe.  An hour spent swapping out summer clothing and shoes for winter attire burns 240 calories.
  • Apple picking.  This is a fun activity for the entire family that helps the local economy and provides fresh fruit while burning 200 calories for every hour of picking.
  • Trick-or-Treating.  A walk with the children around the neighborhood is healthy family time, and an hour-and-a-half walk burns roughly 330 calories.  Try not to sabotage the benefits of this activity by eating too much candy.

Autumn brings a time for new and exciting fitness opportunities along with a bounty of fresh and healthy fruits and vegetables that can be picked by the consumer.  All of this, combined with family time enjoying the cool fresh air and beautiful landscapes, offers a great opportunity to live green, be green.
